Educators & parents: You can do this Hour of Code Activity as a class or students can work on it independently. If you have any questions or need help, email info@codespeaklabs.com.
This Hour of Code activity can be done completely screen-less / unplugged, or you can do the story first and then do a coding activity on a tablet. Our story integrates real code using ScratchJr, a coding language that gets kids coding at an early age (ages 3-6) using colorful coding blocks.
This is a great introduction for students with no coding background. Students will be introduced to the concept of coding as a way to control what sprites do, including using the ScratchJr coding blocks to make characters talk and hide.
For this Hour of Code activity, we'll start with a story. You can find the full PDF of the story as well as related worksheets that you can print out by clicking on this link: http://bit.ly/cslletsplay
In the video below, you can watch a read aloud of the story and then a tutorial of how to code your own ScratchJr project.
ScratchJr is a FREE app you can download on any tablet or phone. Students can use the ScratchJr programming app to code and remix the story that you read together.
Download the free ScratchJr app onto each of your classroom iPads or Android tablets:
If you would like to order our hardcover children's book "How to Turn Your Grown-Up Into a Robot and Other Coding Stories" which includes this story, you can order one here: https://www.codespeaklabs.com/activities-for-home
If you liked this story, we also have other coding related stories for kids. For example, check out our read aloud of "Team Hardware vs. Team Software."
